Aegir leather - the first photos of this Ox leather.

5 new leathers were launched yesterday, which means there are 6 remaining that I am working hard to get finished and photographed for the store pages. Hopefully they will be ready in time to be launched next weekend, but there are three I want to preview for you this week – starting with my personal favourite, which I’ve called Aegir.

This dark brown leather comes from a Scandinavian tannery and is an Ox leather. It’s a pure vegetable tanned full grain hide produced in very small batches, and I think it’s beautiful. It is very soft and pliable (no need to break this one in, it’s soft from first wear) and has a gorgeous grain. I struggled with deciding on a name for this one, so in the end I looked into Norse mythology and decided on Aegir – a giant who the Vikings worshiped as the Lord of the Ocean. It seemed fitting to have a reference to the leather’s origin.

This has to be one of the most beautiful leathers I’ve worked with over the last 10 years, and I am sure it is set to be a firm favourite. When deciding on what colour stitching to use when building the strap I went with dark brown thread – other colours will work of course, but I think the low contrast stitching really brings out the grain in the leather. I hope you like it.
