The leather I’ve chosen to be “in the spotlight” during March 2022 is not a new leather. This is a leather I’ve been using for a few years now, but has been a firm favourite of mine since it was launched. Horween Nut Brown is, as the name suggests, a product of the Horween tannery in Chicago, and is a leather I first started working with back in 2018. Over the last 4 years I’ve made several hundred straps using Horween Nut Brown, and the hugely positive nature of customer feedback has meant I’ve re-ordered it time and time again. I consider it to be one of the finest leathers I use and it’s become a core leather at Toshi Straps – it’s one of a dozen or so leathers that I plan on having available indefinitely. It is certainly a leather I would highly recommend, it really is that good.

Horween Nut Brown

So, a little bit of info about the leather itself. Horween Nut Brown is a full grain horse hide with bags of character. It is a vegetable tanned leather, and so it will also age beautifully as it patinates with wear. It really has all the characteristics of a strap that will stand the tests of time and be a firm favourite for many years. There’s no getting away from the fact that it’s a thick leather, though. Straps from Horween Nut Brown leather come in at around 5mm thick, which is fairly substantial, but it is a naturaly soft and pliable leather so wears very comfortably from day one.

Because of the thickness of the leather, Horween Nut Brown really comes into it’s own with a larger watch. My Panerai 87 is a good example – a beast of a watch that I find can be a little top heavy on a thin strap. Back in 2018 when I introduced Horween Nut Brown leather I was quick to make myself a strap from it for my 87, and this blog post shows the result. That strap is still going strong, but for this “in the spotlight” post I wanted a new strap to photograph, and the strap I made for these photos I decided to go with a more neutral stitch colour (and chose light brown linen thread). To be honest, I’m not sure which of the two I prefer. I like them both and both work beautifully to frame the watch as I wanted.

As it is the leather in the spotlight for March 2022, for the whole of the month you can get £20 off the cost of a Horween Nut Brown strap (see below for details of this offer).
