Mosto is one of 4 leathers that I launched on my website in November last year. It is a leather produced by an Italian tannery from top grain cow hides – the shoulders of the hides to be precise – and is then dyed before being tumbled.

Tumbling is a process of spinning the leather hides inside a large drum containing small stones (imagine an industrial sized washing machine – the drum looks a little like that, but much larger). Tumbling massages the leather loosening the leather fibres to soften the leather, and in doing so it brings out the natural grain and gives the finished product a natural, semi-sheen appearance. Tumbled leather is often called “Nappa” leather.

I’ve always liked coloured leather straps on my Panerai zero. The plain black dial and polished steel case lends itself well to a bit of colour, and so it always seems to work when the strap has some colour to it. Mosto was therefore a prime example of a leather I would want to make myself a strap from, and those who know me know it doesn’t take much to convince me I need to make myself a new strap! I had some time at the weekend so got my tools out and this is the result. For this strap I went with natural linen thread for some contrast and (although I am biased) I think it looks really good on the watch. Mosto is a very soft leather from the start, supremely comfortable to wear and I love the tumbled texture. And the colour – the colour is just gorgeous!

Incidentally, over the last month or so I’ve had several people ask me why I called it Mosto, and it’s really quite simple. “Mosto” is the name given to grape juice produced in wine making before the fermentation process begins, and as this leather has a deep red wine colour I went for Mosto.

Mosto leather promotion.

I rate this leather very highly. If you’re looking for a colourful leather strap to pair with your watch I’d recommnend it. To help a little I’ve decided to run a short promo. Order a strap made from Mosto leather before the end of the month and use the coupon code “MOSTO15” at the checkout to get £15 off the cost of your strap. This promo is running now, but it is strictly time limited and will end at midnight (GMT) on Sunday 31st January 2021!
