Horween Nut Brown leather with dark brown stitching.

Horween Nut Brown is one of the eight new leathers I bought on my trip at the beginning of the month, and will be available tomorrow. I’ve completely fallen in love with this leather, and so thought I’d write this quick blog post to give you a preview.

The Horween tannery in Chicago is quite simply my favourite tannery. Over the 10+ years I’ve been making watch straps, I’ve used a lot of the leather they produce, and the quality is always perfect. This particular leather is one that I’ve been looking for since I started making straps, but until now it wasn’t available through my supplier. I’d mentioned it many times over the last few years to Horween’s UK agent, and out of the blue he called me a month ago to tell me he finally had some. Of course I had to see it as soon as possible, so I dropped everything and brought forward my annual trip (which was originally scheduled for July).

Horween have produced one of the most fabulous leathers I have ever worked with here. It is a fully vegetable tanned horse hide with a lovey open grain. It makes a thick strap at approx. 5mm, but it’s very soft and pliable from the start, so isn’t over-powering. Of course as it’s a full grain veg tanned leather it will surely develop a lovely patina with some wear. I’m absolutely in love with this leather, and I have a suspicion some of you will be, too.

I’ve been working hard over the last two weeks to get all eight of the new leathers ready to go live on my store by the end of this month, and I’m hopeful tomorrow will be the day they are launched (I’ll be working late to make sure there are no delays). There are some new additions I think will be very popular among them, but I think it will take a lot to improve on Horween Nut Brown. If you are only going to order one strap from me over the next 12 months I would strongly recommend Horween Nut Brown is the one.
