The leather I’ve chosen to be “in the spotlight” during May 2022 is a leather I introduced 12 months ago, and one that has been in my personal rotation ever since. Heidrun has been one of my favourites since it was launched, so I’ve decided to make it this months recommendation, and I’m offering a £20 discount on any Heidrun strap ordered during May (see the bottom of this blog post for details of the promotion).

Heidrun

Heidrun is a leather produced from Nigerian goat skins. Each skin goes through a lengthy vegetable tanning process before being dyed a lovely warm brown colour. The resulting leather is soft, with a naked, distressed look that makes it a very interesting looking leather in my eyes – and perfect for a watch strap.

For a Toshi Strap, Heidrun is a little thinner than normal (a Heidrun strap will be approximately 3mm thick). Although I loved the look of the leather when I found it, the fact that it was a little thinner than most of the leathers I use was a concern. I’ve always considered a 4mm thick strap to be about perfect, so I hesitated a little, but I did take a sample from the tannery and made a strap from it to see how it performed. I wore that test strap on my zero for a month and loved it, so I finally placed an order and last March it was added to my store – and as you can see from the photos I’ve since paired a Heidrun strap with my Panerai 24 and I can confirm it works beautifully with a large watch.

The strap photographed for this blog post has been stitched with butterscotch linen thread. This strap was made specifically for my Panerai 24 so I chose butterscotch thread to work with the creamy tritium lume on the dial, but it also goes very well with the warm brown leather. Looking back through my order book, butterscotch thread has without doubt been the most popular choice with customers for this leather since it was launched, but I’ve also made straps stitching the leather with black, natural, royal blue and light brown thread, and all have looked damn good.

This leather is highly recommended, and as it is the leather in the spotlight for May 2022, for the whole of the month you can get £20 off the cost of a Heidrun strap (see below for details of this offer).
