I decided at the start of 2022 that every month this year I would select one of my personal favourite leathers to highlight. This month the leather “in the spotlight” is one of my all time favourites. Crimson.

Crimson is a leather I found back in 2015 when on a visit to a leather wholesaler. I was told it had been produced as a special run by a European tannery, and the wholesaler didn’t have much of it, but after handling the leather I knew immediately it would make a wonderful watch strap and so I bought all they had. I added Crimson to my website store later that year, and since then I’ve made numerous straps from Crimson leather for myself (as well as many hundreds for customers). There isn’t a huge amount of this leather left now, but it’s one I highly recommend, and it’s on sale until the end of the month (see the bottom of this blog post for info on the promo).

Crimson

Crimson leather is a very soft, vegetable tanned, top grain buffalo leather in a dark red colour with a beautiful natural grain pattern. Sometimes a leather just works, and as well as looking beautiful, Crimson is one of those leathers. It has the perfect feel for a watch strap.

The natural pliability of this leather, combined with a strap thickness of approximately 4mm (which I’ve always found to be the sweet spot for a watch strap), and the fact that it is a top grain leather, results in an exceptionally comfortable yet hard wearing strap. And of course Crimson has the added advantage of being a vegetable tanned leather, so it builds patina as it gets worn. Everything considered it’s not hard to work out why I like this leather so much.

Over the years I’ve used many different thread colours to stitch Crimson leather. The strap shown in this blog post is stitched with royal blue thread, but it works very well with natural, grey, denim, red & black threads too.
